I love playing sports – always have, always will. Just about anything involving a ball or a puck, or a stick, bat, or racquet. CrossFit gives me the opportunity to play a sport on a daily basis, and once I discovered that, I was hooked. Best of all, I get to play this sport with the great group of people and athletes at Black Hills CrossFit.

Laura Dempster

Laura’s life truly began when she left Parliament due to creative differences with the band.  Realizing she was now facing unemployment with no talents besides being able to produce ukulele music, she acquired a position at Jack Rabbit Slims.  Night in and out she served five dollar shakes to quizzical looks dressed as the thirty-seventh president, Richard Nixon, until an incident with a pet grizzly, a dance contest and ill-fated bet, left her again unemployed.  Laura decided it was for the best and felt she always was destined for a greater purpose.

Determined to find what that purpose might be, she tried her hand at a myriad of jobs including, calico cat wrangler, baby oil model sprayer at “Guns and Garden,” Crayola color inventor, Herbal Essences smell tester, Nokia phone salesperson, and a research assistant to a scientist who hypothesized that non-chick shaped Peeps tasted differently than chick-shaped ones.  After some time she discovered the latter was a rouse, the long con, an elaborate year-long hoax to rob the neighboring building, the “Circle K.”  Deciding strange things were definitely afoot, Laura, now 30lbs overweight from the monumental increase of Peep consumption and unhappy she was no closer to finding her true purpose than scientists are to perfecting artificial banana flavoring, wandered into the nearest aquarium.

At the aquarium, she ran into 80s aerobic legend, Richard Simmons, who, like our heroine, often had epiphanies in front of the jellyfish exhibit.  She promptly snapped a selfie with the fro-haired icon and posted it to Facebook.  While perusing the aforementioned social media wormhole, she noticed many of her friends were now into something called “CrossFit.”  Assuming it was some kind of religious boot camp, she wrote it off, until it was explained that besides cursing your chosen deity after certain hellacious workouts, CrossFit has no religious context but involves “constantly varied, high-intensity, functional movements” to maximize one’s fitness. At the time she understood very little of this, but was impressed by the speakers words (and muscles) and decided to give it the ol’ college try.

In four months, the change was substantial.  Laura had lost all the Peep weight, made massive muscle gains, and was happier than ever.  She finally discovered where she truly belonged and what she was meant to do in life:  share her new found passion with anyone who would listen.  She has been CrossFitting since the summer of 2012, eating clean, and coaching others since October 2013 and has never looked back…

Drew Green

I discovered CrossFit while I was in the Navy, stationed in San Diego, California.  I remember my first workout.  I couldn’t do a pullup, I had no muscular or cardiovascular endurance, and I was unable to finish the WOD.  I thought I was in shape!  Boy was I wrong.  CrossFit put me in check.  I fell in love with the programming, the focus on form and technique, and the constant variety of the workouts.  As a trainer, my goal is to share my love of CrossFit with the clients.  I know how intimidating it can be to walk into a CrossFit gym, but if you stick with it you soon discover your true potential as an athlete.  You also form a lifelong underground family with a group of awesome people who understand your love for CrossFit!

Alex Hurdel

My life before CrossFit involved infrequent trips to the gym to run with a healthy dose of hiking in the Black Hills.  My experience with lifting weights was absolute zero.  I started coming to BHCF in December of 2012 with the goal of becoming fit and active.  I have been enjoying CrossFit ever since.  Like many others, I quickly became obsessed with working out at BHCF, and instead of believing that going to the gym was a chore, it became one of my favorite places to go to.  I loved it so much that I decided to become a trainer.  Outside of the gym, I am working towards a bachelor’s degree in Math and Science Secondary Education at Black Hills State University in Spearfish, SD.

Jeremiah Ratzsch

I’m a father of three amazing children.  They are my joy and greatest passion.  When I’m not with them I’m usually found in the gym.  I’ve been involved in sports since I could walk.  Football was my game and linebacker was my position.  I played through high school and college until I went to nursing school.  Through football I found weight training.  I’ve been weight training for over 20 years.  An old high school buddy talked me into CrossFit and I’ve been hooked ever since.  CrossFit has produced results for me far beyond any other program.  My 10+ years’ experience as a RN has given me additional insight into the human body, health, nutrition, training, and how it affects us.  Training at BHCF is both a privilege and an honor.  I consider myself blessed to be a part of this family seeking to improve their fitness and quality of life.  You will never realize your full potential in life until you pick up a barbell!

  1. How do I schedule the 3 pre workouts? I work monday through friday 7-5 school wednesday 7pm-9pm, thursday 530-730. and i also have a coworker who is also interested and has the same schedule
