Being active was ingrained in me at an early age playing various sports growing up (basketball, rugby, tennis, football, baseball, and soccer).   After I graduated high school I attended the Air Force Academy, where I played on the rugby team.  The physical and mental strength needed to excel in sports is very similar to what is required in CrossFit.   My passion for coaching comes from seeing our clients being positive role models for their children.  The community aspect — seeing family bonds grow stronger and stronger within our walls — is something that I hold close to my heart.  BHCF is a place where people can escape the daily grind and I have every intention of securing the integrity of our gym.

I love playing sports – always have, always will. Just about anything involving a ball or a puck, or a stick, bat, or racquet. CrossFit gives me the opportunity to play a sport on a daily basis, and once I discovered that, I was hooked. Best of all, I get to play this sport with the great group of people and athletes at Black Hills CrossFit.

Prior to starting Crossfit in 2011 my weekly exercise routine was to run 20 miles a week, do a spin/strength class, mountain bike, and lift on my own in the gym. Super time consuming! I thought I had to workout that much to be fit especially since I was over 40. My husband talked me into trying Crossfit with him, I reluctantly agreed. After our first WOD I (we) was hooked… It was all I could think and talk about it. My husband and I relived the WOD in the evenings; our family and friends grew tired of hearing about it. Crossfit had gotten in my blood, best of all I no longer needed to run all those miles and I kept improving my 13.1 time.

Second of all I looked and felt stronger then ever. CF pushed and continues to push me to accomplish things I never imagined both inside and outside the gym. CF not only strengthens your body but also your mind. I plan to live long and be strong, healthy and physically prepared for anything. I truly love to share my CF experience and knowledge and to watch and help change other peoples lives just as it has mine.

I am a chronic runner who turned into a CrossFitter.  I initially joined CrossFit to supplement my marathon training.   It took a few months for me to drink the kool-aid, but anyone that knows me knows that I am now “crazy” about CrossFit.   I will never forget my first Fran, the first WOD that I actually “got” double unders, and more recently, my first muscle-up.   I continue coming to CrossFit each week because I have FUN – and I cherish the life-long friendships that I have developed.

My professional background includes a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science from the University of North Dakota, and a Doctorate of Physical Therapy from the Mayo School of Health Sciences. I work as a physical therapist at Regional Rehabilitation Institute.

Physical activity and athletics have always been part of my life. I tried four different sports in high school plus all kinds of recreational activities and while I enjoyed all of that, nothing grabbed me until Crossfit. Just a couple of visits to a CrossFit gym and I found my passion. The natural camaraderie, fun, and competition in CrossFit yields an intensity that cannot be matched by anything else I’ve done. Perseverance, hard work, sacrifice, self-control, integrity, and commitment are all lessons I’ve learned in a CrossFit gym. Most important are the people I have met, a family of amazing people who are dedicated to health and wellness and having fun! I train CrossFit athletes because I want others to experience this same life-changing opportunity!

Outside the gym, I am working to obtain certification as a licensed massage therapist. Very likely my focus will be sports massage where I can help athletes of all abilities prepare for or recover from athletic activity.

I discovered CrossFit while I was in the Navy, stationed in San Diego, California.  I remember my first workout.  I couldn’t do a pullup, I had no muscular or cardiovascular endurance, and I was unable to finish the WOD.  I thought I was in shape!  Boy was I wrong.  CrossFit put me in check.  I fell in love with the programming, the focus on form and technique, and the constant variety of the workouts.  As a trainer, my goal is to share my love of CrossFit with the clients.  I know how intimidating it can be to walk into a CrossFit gym, but if you stick with it you soon discover your true potential as an athlete.  You also form a lifelong underground family with a group of awesome people who understand your love for CrossFit!

I started CrossFit in 2012 to get back into rock-climbing shape. After doing CrossFit for three weeks I signed up for the 2012 CrossFit Games Open and was hooked. I love the competition aspect that CrossFit offers as well as the community of friends with which I can compete. I enjoy training athletes of all ability levels and love trying to perfect the Olympic lifts.

I grew up an athlete playing just about every sport. Oddly enough, I was introduced to weight lifting as a cheerleader. Fast forward to college, I worked part time at a local gym personal training, teaching group classes and fell in love with not only what fitness could do for me but how I could help so many people through fitness. I was an avid weight lifter, too much cardio kind of girl until a co-worker/lifting partner of mine suggested I try CrossFit. I was skeptical at first, but hindsight, I was so intimidated. Intimidated to step out of my comfort zone, to not be good at it, to not be the “strong girl” as I was used to. My very first class was the most exciting, yet hardest and humbling thing I had ever done. However, I had “drank the koolaide” and was instantly hooked. CrossFit has changed my life. It has changed the way I view my body and as a woman, we all know that is constant struggle. It has shown me, just when you think you aren’t capable of more, you are and you do things you never thought possible. It has grown me physically and mentally but most importantly what CrossFit has done for me is open my eyes to an amazing community of like minded people, all out to improve their health and wellness, while encouraging one another to the be the best they can be.

I was born and raised in Rapid City. Straight out of high school I joined the United States Marine Corps. After I got out of the Marines I returned to Rapid City and went back to my usual thing – working out at a globo gym and making my own workout plans. Not long after moving back home I ran into Will and his wife. They asked what I do for exercise and told me I should try CrossFit. I didn’t take him up on his offer but as fate would have it, a couple months later a buddy of mine asked me if I’d like to go try this new type of workout he was really into. I walked into Black Hills CrossFit and saw Will there, who said “it’s about time you came in.” Just eight months after doing CrossFit religiously I realized that I aspired to be a coach, so in July of 2013 I went to Colorado and got my Level 1. And the rest is history. I still love doing CrossFit, and I love helping others reach their fitness goals.

I’m a father of three amazing children.  They are my joy and greatest passion.  When I’m not with them I’m usually found in the gym.  I’ve been involved in sports since I could walk.  Football was my game and linebacker was my position.  I played through high school and college until I went to nursing school.  Through football I found weight training.  I’ve been weight training for over 20 years.  An old high school buddy talked me into CrossFit and I’ve been hooked ever since.  CrossFit has produced results for me far beyond any other program.  My 10+ years’ experience as a RN has given me additional insight into the human body, health, nutrition, training, and how it affects us.  Training at BHCF is both a privilege and an honor.  I consider myself blessed to be a part of this family seeking to improve their fitness and quality of life.  You will never realize your full potential in life until you pick up a barbell!

I have always been an active person. Athletics has been a part of my life since the age of four, starting with gymnastics. I participated in many sports throughout high school including basketball, volleyball, softball and track. Track was where I found my niche, winning multiple state championships and eventually competing in college. While competing for Black Hills State University I achieved 9 All-American honors and won 5 National Championships in the 100 meters hurdles and the Heptathlon. When I was finished competing I was looking for something to help maintain my fitness level and stay healthy. It didn’t take long for me to fall in love with CrossFit.

BHCF has become more than than just a gym to me. It is like a second home where I have created life long friendships and am challenged by amazing people every day to push myself. As a coach I enjoy helping and watching others reach their goals. We all have our own goals, but at BHCF we accomplish them together!

My fitness lifestyle started at a very young age growing up highly involved in multiple sports. The bulk of my athleticism was spent 9 years in the pool as a competitive swimmer, performed gymnastics and played softball. In college I found my love for distance running and became an avid runner finishing 11 full marathons with completion of 3 Boston marathons. I continued to use swimming and yoga to supplement my running with all my focus and drive geared towards training for races. It wasn’t until I stepped foot in a crossfit gym were I found a whole another level of love for fitness. I had never lifted a weight in my life nor would of I ever dreamed of successfully completing a strict pull-up. Within 2 months of crossfit, my marathon times significantly improved with a cut of 20 minutes off of my next race. I continued to grow and love the crossfit culture and level of commitment to fitness engrained in the crossfit community and athletes. Not only did I continue to see improvement in my personal fitness, strength, endurance and lifestyle, but I developed so much more love for the community and other athletes that have made this community my second family. I decided I wanted to become a coach because I truly enjoy helping people in all spectrums of life, especially health and fitness. I have so much passion and excitement coaching fellow athletes as a Crossfit trainer. It’s the moment when a fellow athlete tells me that a simple drill, piece of advice, or progression technique helped them PR a lift, complete their first gymnastic move, or improve time on a metcon that is most rewarding. My trainer and leadership philosophy is to influence others and help them find their own level of dedication and love for fitness, and find what drives their excitement to return to the gym everyday. If I can get you out of your comfort zone or routine, this is were the magic happens!

During my childhood, I never quite found my calling in sports I jumped around between a few different things such as baseball, soccer, karate, and football. It wasn’t until my senior year of high school when I joined the track team, that I really found a drive to be competitive. I was looking for something similarly competitive to get into after I graduated. A few months before I joined the Air Force a friend of mine showed me some videos of the CrossFit Games. We conveniently had our first CrossFit gym opening up in my hometown, after the first workout I was hooked. So, once I moved to Rapid City after basic training and tech school I came to Black Hills CrossFit and picked up where I had left off. Through CrossFit I discovered my passion for Olympic Weightlifting. I just wanted to learn everything I could about the sport, so I got my coaching certification through USA Weightlifting. That way I can share any knowledge I have to make people better, whether they just want to get more familiar with the movements, use it to make them more efficient in CrossFit workouts, or want to get into the sport of Olympic Weightlifting.

I started CrossFit with a friend as part of a “biggest loser challenge”. I wasn’t in it to lose weight so much as to motivate myself to take better care of my body. By the time the 10 week challenge was over I had found what I was looking for. Every single aspect of CrossFit has challenged me in some way. I am certain that my involvement with this community has presented me with opportunities I never would have known. Nothing has been easy, and I take pride in knowing that while the friends around me have helped to motivate me, every single accomplishment has been my own.

I have always been a huge advocate for getting the kiddos started young in realizing how important it is to move! When the option to coach our little ones became available I jumped at the opportunity. Kids have no fear. They want to go, go, go! It is so much fun watching them learn. They inspire me to be a better athlete as well as challenge me to be a better coach for them. I am so grateful for the chance to teach and look forward to helping them reach their goals!

Yoga Instructor

Melina Condos

I originally found yoga about 10 years ago as a compliment to dance and was happily surprised by the challenges it brought forward both for my body and mind. After years of practice, I completed my training as a certified yoga instructor in 2016 through the international Yoga Alliance and currently teach at Sol Yoga Collective in downtown Rapid City.

You can expect my classes to be playful and hands on with a focus on flexibility, strength, and alignment. I believe that yoga is for everyBODY and love to work one-on-one or offer modifications to postures, so that each pose is accessible to everyone in class. I am so looking forward to bringing yoga and its benefits to the Black Hills CrossFit community. My hope is that you leave the mat feeling challenged, refreshed and balanced. See you on the mat!
